Theron Broers are celebrating their 50th birthday this month with interesting tales to tell from the past and looking forward towards the future with this hands-on family business.

Management on Theron Broers' 50th birthday

Manie Theron, now 78, and his brother Piet Theron, started this dynamic building construction company in 1959 inĀ  Worcester. There they worked mostly for the state building schools, police stations, libraries, reservoirs, factories and housing projects. Manie says the current deep recession is the second one in his lifetime.

"We went through difficult times back then, but we came out on top." One of the reasons for their succes is the working relationship with everyone working at Theron Broers. Hilton Williams who has been working for them for 21 years, is one of the second generation following in his father's footsteps.

Manie's son, Lourens, took over the business after 21 years when Manie decided to retire shortly thereafter, with a plant hire shop, the first in Hermanus and Bosplasie caravan park as well as the Onrus part time building inspector. Lourens went to the army after school and thereafter worked in architecture which allowed him fast experience in the building trade. He is still a member of the Institute of Architectural Professionals.

Although time do not allow him to practice anymore, he supports the local professionals in Hermanus and applies his talent to benefit the building contracts Theron Broers is involved in. Starting again with no plant and R13,000 Lourens built up Theron Broers to what it is today with the help of his men. Theron Broers went from strength to strength with Lourens's son, Manie junior (the third generation) also joining the family business as project manager after his studies in 2008.

Theron Broers name boards are seen regularly all over the Overstrand and now also in Benguela Cove and Greyton.

Manie snr can construct a long list of all the building projects he has been involved in, but says one in particular stands out. "The AFM Church in Worcester that we built years ago was a perfect design with laminated wooden roof trusses and beautiful finishes."

The Bosplasie caravan park and later the Bosplasie development with Lourens was some of the developments. The first office in Hermanus was on the Bosplasie site.
